Rockwell superficial hardness testing methodThe Rockwell superficial hardness tester is shown at a in fig. 5-37. The method of testing with this mechine is identical to that of the basic Rockwell hardness tester. The difference is that rockwell superficial tester tests the hardness closer to the outside surface of the metal than the rockwell tester does.Views B and C show hardness testing machines that can be altered to test either rockwell hardness or Rockwell superficial hardness.Process descriptionIn order to test the hardness closer to the surface, a smaller minor load and smaller major load are used. The three common loads used on the superficial tester are 15 kg, 30 kg, and 45 kg. The same diamond point penetrator and 1/16 in. Ball used in the Rockwell test are also used on the Rockwell superficial tester.Details of machineSince there are two choices of penetrators and three choices of kg loadings, there are six total combinations available for used on the superficial tester. Thus, the superficial tester employs six common scales. Show the relationship of these scales to their penetrators and kg loadings. For example, 55 - 15 N would mean that the material has a hardness value of 55 units. The sample was measured on a Rockwell superficial test machine where 15 kg and a diamond point penetrator were used to run the test. A reading of 75 - 30T would mean that the material hardness is 75 units and the 1/16 in. Ball and 30 kg load were used. The penetrator-load combination on a Rockwell superficial tester for the hardest steels would be the one employed for the 45N scale. This combination makes use of the diamond point penetrator and the 45 kg load.
