Given the limitations of existing interventions, it remains apriority to investigate novel treatments for health anxiety. Recentdevelopments in novel psychological interventions have includedmindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT; Segal, Williams, &Teasdale, 2002). MBCT is a cost-effective 8-week class-basedprogram in which participants are taught to observe their thoughtsand feelings through the repeated practice of intentionally returningattention to an object (e.g., the breath or body sensations).Participants are taught how to cultivate direct experiential awarenessand nonjudgmental acceptance of whatever arises in eachmoment (including negative mood states that trigger anxiety andnegative thinking). The cultivation of awareness during mindfulnesspractice enables participants to recognize when negative andruminative responses are being triggered and facilitates decenteringfrom such patterns of thought, seeing them as mental eventsrather than as valid reflections of reality. Unlike standardcognitive– behavioral therapy (CBT), where the focus has traditionallybeen on changing the content of thoughts, MBCT focuseson fostering meta-cognitive awareness and the modification ofmeta-cognitive processes that maintain unhelpful reactive or ruminativemind states.MBCT was designed
