Therefore in this study we usedzebrafish as a model to further investigate effectsof DM on reproductive parameters.Zebrafish selection gains significance since itwas recommended as a model species as perOECD guidelines for analyzing the influenceof chemicals (OECD, 2000). This tropical fishbecause of its genetic and physiological similarityto mammals has become a very goodmodel of choice for toxicological screening(Peterson et al., 2008) especially during developmentand reproduction (Wixon, 2000;Anderson et al., 2000). Zebrafish has manyinnate characteristics that are advantages inresearch, which include its small physical size,robust nature, ease of culture, high fecundityand externally developing transparent embryos(Segner, 2009) allowing for cost effectiveinvestigations.Review of literature suggests that onlylittle published work is available on the effectsof DM in zebrafish. They are significant alterationsin DNA, RNA, total protein, free amino acid contents and activities of acid and alkalinephosphatases (Sharma and Ansari, 2011,Sharma et al., 2012), behavioral and body colourchanges (Ansari and Sharma, 2009), significantreductions in fecundity and hatchability(Sharma and Ansari, 2010), sensitivity ofearly stages (Gorge and Nagel, 1990) and craniofacialabnormalities in embryos (DeMiccoet al., 2010).
