Porsche unveils new 550 hp twin-turbo V8 engineOver at the 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium, Porsche has quietly brought in a new 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, Car and Driver reports. The engine on display will be making its way into the new Panamera Turbo and Cayenne.Said to be loosely based on Audi’s turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 mill in the Audi S4, Porsche’s unit comes with two twin-scroll turbochargers and is said to produce 550 hp at 5,750 rpm and 770 Nm of torque from 1,960 rpm to 5,500 rpm, while the redline is at 6,800 rpm.More powerful than the outgoing bi-turbo 4.8 litre V8 unit, the new engine is also claimed to be more fuel efficient because of its cylinder-deactivation system. It possesses a “half-engine mode” which is activated at low loads between 950 rpm and 3,500 rpm, cutting fuel consumption by up to 30%.Meanwhile, the engine is also optimised to have a start-stop system for hybrid applications, as highlighted by the brand. According to Porsche, the new unit will also have “significantly reduced CO2 emissions” as well.To be built next to Audi’s turbocharged 3.0 litre V6 engines, both units are made to fit onto longitudinal architectures such as the MLB platform from Audi (paired with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission) and the MSB platform from Porsche (mated to a PDK dual-clutch transmission). The new twin-turbo engine will make its appearance in the Volkswagen Group’s upmarket models in the future, more specifically in Audi and Bentley models and the Lamborghini Urus SUV.
