An MPFM measures the total velocity

An MPFM measures the total velocity of the flow as well as the phase fractions, and then multiplies these to get the oil, gas and water flow rates. With this information the operator gains control of the changing parameters of the flow. MPFM simply gives the information needed at the right time for operators to manage their well in the most efficient and cost effective way possible.
MPFMs are usually used for 3 different scenarios. Well Testing, Production Monitoring and Production Allocation. Explained simply; Well Testing is the same as Production Monitoring except Well Testing is done in intervals instead of continuously by moving the meter from location to location giving information from each well only for a limited period. The same data is given as if the meter were installed on a permanent basis, as in Production Monitoring. The main reasons for choosing a well testing configuration is cost reduction, as the cost of the meter can be shared on the production profit from several wells instead on one single well. This is typically done for smaller wells where an MPFM is seen as a significant investment. Production Allocation is simply the measuring of the total amount of oil and gas from a well. In many projects there are different partners with different ownership and with the help of an MPFM each part knows how much of the value created belonging to respective partner. Typically a well may be connected to a pipeline also serving other wells and without the measurement of the flow before it reached the main pipeline there are no possible ways to detect how much of the total flow comes from each specific well.
