Art Schools

More young Singaporeans are taking active interest in media, fine arts and performing arts. One example of this new breed of creative minds is 30-year-old filmmaker Anthony Chen. Chen brought Singapore’s cinema scape to the limelight at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, when he won the Camera d’Or for his debut feature film Ilo Ilo.

The growing enthusiasm and interest for these less conventional fields of study is echoed among the youth as well:

“People say that you can’t survive doing arts in Singapore. No doubt, it’s tough; but there’s infrastructure here that allows you to give it a shot,” says a 25-year-old freelance theatre enthusiast who goes by the name ‘Juz’.

The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and LASALLE College of the Arts are two specialised Art Schools which offer degree and diploma courses to students with a creative bent of mind. NAFA offers degree courses in collaboration with 5 universities from UK, and LASALLE is a partner institution of Goldsmiths University of London, a premier institute for the arts and designing.

The foreign-local partnerships that Singapore universities have are definitely proving to be great platforms for students to develop a global perspective, while at the same time being exposed to new ideas and fields of study.

In 2013, Singapore became the first Asian nation to break into the Top 10 Universitas 21 rankings conducted by The Times Higher Education. Singapore continues to have two of its universities in The Times Higher Education Index in 2014 as well. Global ideas and perspectives, along with the government’s relentless thrust on education and innovation, have made significant contributions in producing and maintaining a high quality student base. Today, Singapore has indeed turned into a ‘Hub for International Education’, as the International Education Journal had predicted years ago.
