The dressing room in Charlie’s stud

The dressing room in Charlie’s studio was a former utility closet he’d had enlarged. Charlie, his back to her, was leaning against the door frame, shaking his streaky blond head at a lavender ruffled evening dress. “Nope. I still don’t like this one, Sara. Unless you think Dior actually wants Margot to look like she’s getting ready for a hot date with the queen of England.”
The lavender dress shook as the wardrobe assistant holding it up for inspection giggled.
“Hey, Charlie,” Margot said softly.
He spun around. “Margot!” Wrapping his arms around her, he twirled her in a tight circle. With a grin he set her down. “Damn, but I’ve missed you. How are you, babe? Has it been really rough?”
“Pretty rough,” she conceded. “But we’re coping as best we can.”
“Good.” He looked like he wanted to say more, but the woman to whom he’d been talking about the insipid dress stepped forward. Wearing a tailored pewter-gray power suit—Armani, without a doubt—the woman openly scrutinized her.
“Hi, I’m Margot,” she said, stretching out her hand. She didn’t have to be told that this woman was the ad executive in charge of the campaign.
“Yes.” The woman gave a brief squeeze of her hand, her critical inspection continuing uninterrupted. “I’ve looked at your face so much these last few weeks I feel I could recognize you anywhere.” Her gaze slid to Charlie. “I’m afraid you’re right about the lavender. A pity.”
“Margot, this is Sara Clarke. She’s with Pace Morris. They’ve got the Dior account. And this is Erin, she’s doing wardrobe. We’ve been culling a few of the outfits,” he explained, gesturing at the two long metal racks laden with dresses and accessories. Dozens of pairs of shoes were lined regimentally against the wall.
“Pleased to meet you, Erin.”
“Likewise. I just love your look.”
Sara Clarke consulted her watch. “Now that Margot’s here, Charlie, I’d like to get started.”
“Sure thing, Sara. You ready, babe?”
“Of course. If I could just have a word with you first, Charlie?” She had to tell him about Travis. It wasn’t fair to keep him in the dark.
“Erin, can you let Palin know Margot’s just changing out of her street clothes and that she’ll be ready in a couple of minutes? And tell Keisha I’d dearly love a cup of that joe he brewed.”
Sara and Erin left the dressing room and Margot turned to Charlie. “Charlie—”
“God, it’s good to see you, babe.” He reached out, framing her face in his hands, and looked deep into her eyes. “I missed you a lot, sweetheart.”
He leaned forward to kiss her. At the last second, Margot shifted, angling her head so that his mouth brushed the corner of hers. “Charlie, listen. I really do need to talk to you. It’s about—”
“We’ll have to save it for later, hon. As you might have figured out, Sara Clarke is a wee bit uptight. She has this thing about keeping to a schedule. But as I had Evan reserve a table for us at Per Se tonight, we can talk over candlelight later. How about it?”
Margot hesitated, considered insisting on talking to him now, but then discarded the idea. Dinner probably would be a better time to tell him about Travis.
She summoned a smile. “Dinner at Per Se? My mouth is watering already.”
“Just don’t drool during the shoot,” he joked, giving her rear a playful swat. “So, have you met everyone on the set?”
“Everyone but Deckert. Palin told me he’s quite the character.”
“Jawohl, baby. But those angel eyes of yours are sure to win him over.”
