The HIRSZFELDS discovered at the end of the First World War that the frequency of the ABO blood groups varied in different peoples. Since then an enormous amount of work has accumulated not only on the distribution of the ABO groups but also on that of the blood group systems elaborated afterwards. This book brings a comprehensive account of the data widely scattered in the literature. It begins with a survey of the genetics and the anthropological significance of the different blood group systems: ABO, Rhesus, MNSs, Lewis, P, Lutheran, Kell, Duffy, Kidd. Other simple genetical systems such as the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide and the sickle-cell trait are promoted to the status of honorary blood groups and are fully discussed. Detailed geographical surveys follow: Northern and Central Europe, Africa south of the Sahara, the Mediterranean area, Asia, Indonesia and Australasia, America. There are chapters on hybrid and migrant populations, on the blood grouping of animals and of bones and tissues. All this is surveyed by a brilliant chapter called " Attempt at a Synthesis ". One might expect that here the book would come to an end, but this is only the first half.

The second half deals with technical problems: laboratory procedures and calculation of gene frequencies. It presents a detailed bibliography of some 1, 700 references as well as blood group distribution maps based on the principle of isobars which are completely original and fascinating to study. Twenty-six blood group frequency tables follow and an exhaustive list of the frequencies of the sickle-cell trait. There are three indices, one topographical and one zoological to the bibliography and one general to the text.

Though this book cannot be called a " must " for the medical man in the tropics, one feels confident that it will offer enjoyable reading and stimulus to all those interested in the different races of mankind. H. Lehmann.
