The significance of these processes

The significance of these processes for the plankton is that there are good
correlations between the biomass of phytoplankton in the North Atlantic and
both the NAO and the position of the Gulf Stream (Taylor 1995). When the
NAO is strongly positive the phytoplankton to the west of the UK, in the central
northeast Atlantic, shows a positive biomass anomaly and the water a positive
temperature anomaly. At the same time, the phytoplankton in the northern
northeast Atlantic shows a declining trend and the water has negative temperature
anomalies.
