Necking is a term used to describe a fusion splice where the diameter of the fused optical fiber is smaller near the electrodes than it was prior to being fused, as shown in Figure 25.48. Necking is typically the result of too much heat during the prefuse, causing glass to be transported away from the splice area and thus producing a high-loss splice. To prevent necking:
1. Ensure you are using the types of cleaning products and the cleaning processes requiredbby the fusion splicer and cleaver manufacturer or described in this chapter.
2. Verify that you have selected the appropriate splicing program or profile for the optical fiber you are splicing.
3. Ensure the optical fibers are properly cleaved.
