In the postwar years Lewis Mumford became one of America's best known intellectuals, and henwas hired to write a regular column for The New Yorker, which appeared under the banner "The Sky Line "He wrote on a wide range of subjects, but architectur was often not far from Ms interests. He was a strong critic, for instance of Le Corbusier's design for the United Nations Building, as ha was of the urban redevelopmen policies ofNew York's Robert Moses. In this particular column, which begins by addressing the changing skylines of American Cities, Mumford concludes with a brief discussion of what he terms the "Bay Region style" of California. Again, it was an indirect swipe at the Museum of Modern Art and the notion of an "International style," but these words would now draw an immediate response from the museum in "backward old New York." The reference to Hitchcock and Wright refers to their collaboration on In the Nature of Materials, u monograph on Wright's work that appeared in 1942
