9.2.5 Heavy Metal Contaminants Pollution of the environment with heavy metal is a global envitonment problem.Heavy metal contaminants result from human activities such as mining and melting, agricultureal activities such as agrochemical usage and long term appplication of urban sewage ludge in agricultural soils, industiral activities such as sewage disposal, waste incineration, as well as from anthropogenic sources (2,6,22). heavy metal ions of healt concern include lead, arsenic, cadminum, copper, zinc, nickel, selenium, coblat, and mercury (table 9.1). heavy metal speciation in the environment is determined by their mobilities and solubilities, which in turn, determine their relative effect on soil ecosystems, and the associated ill-health effects. Once in the environment, metal and metalloids often accumulate in the agricultural soisl and water, ending up in the food due to transfer from soil to plant. The eco-existence and peristence of heavy metals in soils as multiple contaminant and human exposure to them through ingestion of heavy metal contaminated food or drinking water, can lead to their accumulation in human, plant, and animals (6).
