Wood allocation among products for maximum profit. Production and sales planning in plywood to carve out a better set of markets for Weyerhaeuser. Managemeat of chip supply as a busine.;s•—and to reduce our own cost of chips as a pulp raw material. Continuing analysis of both pulp and paperboard production and distribution to improve profits. And, economic determination of size and capacity of selected new company facilities to ensure that, if built, major new investments will produce long-term operating economies.
Aiding Managers
Operations research people are not production experts; they are scien¬tists. Their value lies in their questioning attitudes and the ability to translate uncertain alternatives into expected differences in costs or profits. They bring the methods of the laboratory out into the world of manufacturing, production, profit and loss.
So, far from competing with managers or taking their place, operations research is most successful where the managers are the most capable.
The most valuable thing a manager has is his own judgment. Operations research frees managers of details so they can work at higher levels of judgment.
Hence, the payoff for operations research study can be very high indeed to Weyerhaeuser Company.
