As newer boundaries are created between us and maps constantly re-drawn the world over, in a world that is still being described as borderless, it is therefore important consider why this is happening. The programme will combine the strengths of the Institute of Political Studies’ strongest departments, Political Geography and Security Studies to create a unique opportunity for students to focus on a key aspect of today’s Political study.

Geopolitical Studies (GPS) is a two-year English-language Master's degree programme fully accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education, which seeks to explore the dynamic relationship between International Politics and Human Geography, focussing on essential theories, thinkers and regions.

Through the core courses, students will gain the theoretical tools and the historical background to develop a deeper analysis of the geography of the world they live in, while through their elective classes (which they may choose from a wide range of up to 30 classes per semester), they are free to strengthen their knowledge in related fields and concentrate on specific regions.

The programme is deliberately structured to take advantage of the multidisciplinary nature of the Institute of Political Studies and the Faculty, and students will be encouraged to make connections between different fields of study, learning to combine a global perspective with attention to detail and local interests. It is an excellent stepping stone in developing an academic career in the field of Political Science, as well as a valuable source of analytical skills and practical background knowledge that can be applied in professional life.

General Requirements

Minimum requirements. In common with other Master's degree programmes at the Faculty, the GPS programme is open only to students who have already completed (or are about to complete) a Bachelor degree. It is not necessary for students to have obtained their Bachelor degree from Charles University, or any university in the Czech Republic. However, students who have earned their Bachelor degree abroad should note that, under current rules on the recognition of foreign diplomas, it will be necessary for them to obtain an official document to say that their Bachelor degree is recognised in the Czech Republic (so-called "nostrifikace"). Although these rules are currently under revision, and we hope that the new rules will be considerably simpler, we do not have details at time of writing. English-language ability. It is also assumed that applicants will have a sufficient knowledge of English to attend classes and write papers in the English language. Students who are not native speakers may be asked to demonstrate their ability to study in English, e.g. by presenting the results of any language tests they have taken. Although we welcome TOEFL and IELTS, they are not necessarily a condition of entry. A real ability to study in English is more important.
