The stylistic aspect
The greater part of the vocabulary in a general dictionary is that of ‘ordinary’ prose. In addition, dictionaries of this kind usually contain a fair number of words from other stylistic levels: on the one hand, slang and everyday informal language (see above), and on the other literary language (from both poetry and prose).

Poetic and literary language has a place only in passive bilingual dictionaries and in monolingual dictionaries. Someone reading a German text might want to know that the poetic word Aar means ’eagle’, whereas one does not often feel the need to translate the English word eagle by means of the poctic German word Aar. Likewise, an English – speaking reader of english poetry would find it useful to have the poetic word glebe (land) explained.

The poetic and literary language poses as a special problem also. In dictionaries, words and expressions of this kinds are usually labelled ‘poet’ or ‘literary’. However, on closer examination these markings actually prove to mean ‘in order poetry’ or ‘in order literature’ (provided, of course, that one is not of the opinion that English poetry ends with Tennyson; Osselton 1979:123). This type of poetry labelling is therefore partly related to the tie factor, which leads us on to the next aspect of selection.

Aspek gaya
