Global climate change poses one of the greatest challengesfacing humanity in this century. This article, which introducesthe American Psychologist special issue on globalclimate change, follows from the report of the AmericanPsychological Association Task Force on the InterfaceBetween Psychology and Global Climate Change. In thisarticle, we place psychological dimensions of climatechange within the broader context of human dimensions ofclimate change by addressing (a) human causes of, consequencesof, and responses (adaptation and mitigation) toclimate change and (b) the links between these aspects ofclimate change and cognitive, affective, motivational, interpersonal,and organizational responses and processes.Characteristics of psychology that cross content domainsand that make the field well suited for providing an understandingof climate change and addressing its challengesare highlighted. We also consider ethical imperatives forpsychologists’ involvement and provide suggestions forways to increase psychologists’ contribution to the scienceof climate change.
