Shamans serve as intermediaries between the world of potent invisiblebeings and the visible but less powerful world of humans and animals.Frequently these invisible beings are believed to erect obstacles and to senddisease and distress to humans who have disobeyed or displeased them.Entering a state of intentional trance, the shaman becomes a mouthpiece forthe off ended spirits or (s)he battles with them for the lost soul of the “dis”-eased patient—all under the threat of visionary physical dismemberment(which may be interpreted as a symbol of temporary ego-fragmentation). Itis certainly not easy to be a shaman, and becoming one is typically accompaniedby physical and mental suff ering, illness, disorientation, frenzied actingout, speaking in tongues, hallucinating, falling ill, and being threatenedby the many aggressive spirits populating the shaman’s unconscious. At thesame time, the shaman’s inner development and career are guided by supportivetutelary spirits that may be seen as ego-ideals and protectors againstthe onslaught of ego-alien demonic apparitions.
