RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design
The research design in this research is descriptive research. According to James (1997) Descriptive research is used to obtain information concerning the current status of the phenomena to describe "what exists" with respect to variables or conditions in a situation. The methods involved range from the survey which describes the status quo, the correlation study which investigates the relationship between variables, to developmental studies which seek to determine changes over time. It means descriptive research is about describe of the range the study.
Crissh (2010) says As the name implies, descriptive research methods are used when the researcher wants to describe specific behavior as it occurs in the environment. There are a variety of descriptive research methods available, and once again, the nature of the question that needs to be answered drives which method is used. Traditionally, descriptive research involves three main categories: observation, case studies, and surveys. Let's take a closer look at each of these individually. So. In this research the researcher using observation in descriptive research method.
Wikipedia (2012) state that descriptive research, is used to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied. It does not answer questions about how/when/why the characteristics occurred. Rather it addresses the "what" question (What are the characteristics of the population or situation being studied?). The description is used for frequencies, averages and other statistical calculations. Often the best approach, prior to writing descriptive research, is to conduct a survey investigation. Qualitative research often has the aim of description and researchers may follow-up with examinations of why the observations exist and what the implications of the findings are.
3.2 Population and Sample
1. Population
Population is a complete set of elements (persons or objects) that possess some common characteristic defined by the sampling criteria established by the researcher. Donald (1972) A “population” consists of all the subjects you want to study. So, the population of this research is students in PERTI Senior High School Padang in the year 2014/2015.
2. Sample
Researcher use stratified random sampling to take the sample this research. According Gay (1997) Sampling is the process of selecting a group of subjects for a study in such a waythat the individuals represent the larger group from which they were selected. This representative portion of a population is called a sample. So, the sample of this research is first years students in PERTI Senior High School
