Some charismatic leaders are unethical and lead their organizations toward illegal
and immoral ends. People are willing to follow the charismatic leader down a
quasi-legal path because of his or her personal magnetism. Garry Winnick, the former
chairman of Global Crossing Ltd., is a modern-day symbol of how gluttonous
and destructive a charismatic leader can be. Winnick, a former junk bond broker,
charmed thousands with his affable personality. He purchased several Rolls Royce
automobiles as gifts for social friends and work associates. On the way to leading
Global Crossing toward bankruptcy, he sold about $730 million of his own company
stock. His work space was a replica of the White House Oval Offi ce. While
thousands of workers were being laid off, Winnick was building the most expensive
private residence in the world for himself and his family. With renovations, the
property in Bel Air, California, was valued at about $90 million.
Personality specialist Robert Hogan says that a potential problem with charismatic
leaders is that some of them are narcissists (self-adoring to a fault). These
leaders have the charisma attributes of being assertive, attractive, and powerful,
but they often fail as leaders because they never admit mistakes. Charisma needs
to be mixed with humility for full effectiveness.55
Boards of directors currently seek CEOs who do not overemphasize charisma
and celebrity status at the expense of concentrating on running the business. In
this way the dark side of charisma can be minimized. Recognize that a true charismatic
and transformational leader is highly concerned about human welfare and
attaining outstanding organizational performance.
