IFN-g, activate macrophages. In animal, models of type 1
DM electron microscopic studies of pancreata showedthat macrophages are the first cell type invading the
islets(Kolb-Bachofen et al., 1988). In vitro studies and
studies on perfused pancreas suggest that Interleukin 1
(IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor (TNFa), two cytokinesmainly produced by macrophages, induce structural
changes of β-cells and suppression of their insulin
releasing capacity (Mandrup-Poulsen et al., 1987).
