Th e success of Head Start led to the creation of threespecifi c programs that furthered the goals of Head Start:Parent & Child Centers, which serve infants and toddlersand their families; the Child and Family Resource Programs, which provide family support services; and the ChildDevelopment Associate credential, which provides earlychildhood training and education for Head Start teachers. It should be noted that, at the beginning, one aim ofHead Start was to change the language and behaviorpatterns of the low-income children served, many ofwhom came from minority groups, and to resocializethem into cultural patterns and values of the mainstream, middle class. Head Start was a “compensatory”program, and the implications were that children frompoor or minority families were unprepared for the demandsof school in terms of language and cognitiveskills, achievement, and motivation. Th is widely heldperspective of the 1960s was known as the “cultural disadvantage”model, which suggests that any language, cognitive, or relational style that diff ers from the Anglo, mainstream, middle-class style is necessarily detrimentalto rather than supportive of the educational process.Contrast this view with the more recent, pluralisticperspective, called the “cultural diff erence” model, whichaffi rms that no one way of “behaving and believing” shouldbe required for successful participation in school or society.Gambar 2-4 meringkas hari ini kepala mulai program
