Vast numbers of Mexicans and Centra

Vast numbers of Mexicans and Central Americans have a much greater
percentage of New World ancestry than do Native Americans; however, they
cannot classify themselves as “Indians” because they are not members of
an offi cial list of recognized tribes in the United States. Forty-two percent
of self-classifi ed Hispanics choose “Other” as their race—demonstrating
that the category does not culturally fi t individuals it is meant to classify.
Furthermore, “Other” has become the fastest-growing census category
(United States Department of Agriculture, 2006)—suggesting that the ways
the census classifi es Americans do not correspond to the ways Americans
classify themselves.
