What Is a Reference Source?In considering selection and evaluation of materials for the reference collection,it is helpful first to attempt to characterize the types of materials most commonlyincluded in reference collections. The ALA Glossary of Library and InformationScience offers the following definitions of a reference book: “1. A book designedby the arrangement and treatment of its subject matter to be consulted for definiteitems of information rather than to be read consecutively. 2. A book whose use isrestricted to the library building.” 1 Marcia Bates labels these definitions “functional”and “administrative.” 2 She further clarifies the concept of a reference bookby describing in greater detail the arrangement and indexing that typically characterizethe presentation of information in reference books.
