Purpose : to measure batting distance skill in sofball.
Discription
Teh test was contructed as an attempt to standardize the mean surement of batting skill. Use of the batting tee lends itself more to objectiv measurement than batting teststhat depend unponthe pitching consistency of some performer. However, teh test skill measure only one aspect of batting skill, ie. Ability to hit distance.
Field markings for the test are as follows :
1. A baseline on which the batting tee is placed
2. Twenty lines 3 yard in length spaced 10 feet apart and parallel to the baseline
3. Twenty line 1 yard in length midway between the 3-yard lines and parallel to them
4. The distance from the basaline is marked at the end of each of the 3-yard lines

Administrative feasibility
Time: one sixty-minute class period for clas of twenty students.
Softball
Personnel: instutor with trained assistants to measure and record the distance of fly balls.
Training Involved: much practice with batting tee should be allowed prior to testing a class. The adjustment of hitting a baal off the batting tee requires considerable experience to enhance the test’s validity and reability.
Equipment And Supplies: a standard softball batting tee.
Five regulation softballs in good condition, and an assertment of softball bats.
Accessoris: field marking and scoring materials.
Facilities And Space: regulation softball playing field or reatively flat area of sufficient size.
Directions
Three warm-up hits are permitted for each player with spot adjusted at the height of the student’s choice. Five trials are then completed without pause.
Scoring Method: the distance from the batting tee to the spit where each ball first touches the ground is rocorded. The sum of the distance of each of the five trials the official test score. A swing that strikes the tee or misses the ball completely counts as one trial.
Scientific Authenticity
Validity: o,64 when correlated with the sum of three judges’ ratings. The score of fifty-eight college women students provided the data for the validity computation.
Reliability: A reliability coefficient of 0,87was derived when the Spearman-Brow Prophecy Formula was applied to step up the split-half metho for obtaining the test’s riliability. The scores of sixty-two subjects fom the collegiate group mentioned above were used to deteemine the reliability coefficient.
Criterion Measure: judges’ ratings of the batter’s grip, stance swing, and hitting consistency.
Additional Comments
Although an impressive relibility coefficient was obtained for the test, a greater number of trials should provide an even greater consistency in individula test scores.
Sports skills tests and mausurement
The test should only be used as part of a test battery since it is limited to the maesurement of batting skill. To determine if skill, test score coud be correlate with another criterion such as seasonal batting averages.
The development of this test was a definite contibution toward a more valid and objective measure of offensive softball skill.
