2017 BMW 740e starts at $90,090It combines a turbocharged four-cylinder and plug-in hybrid. The BMW 2017 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance plug-in hybrid arrives in the United States in August starting at $90,090 after a $995 destination charge. We saw the model debut in Europe at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.BMW uses iPerformance to denote its plug-in hybrid models. The 740e xDrive combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an electric motor mounted on the eight-speed automatic gearbox for a total system output of 322 horsepower (240 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet of torque (500 Newton-meters). All-wheel drive means the power can go where it’s most necessary. The powertrain can move the luxury sedan to 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in 5.1 seconds and to a limited top speed of 155 mph (249 kph). Even in pure EV mode, the model can reach 75 mph (121 kph). The EV portion of the system uses a lithium-ion battery with a net capacity of 6.5 kilowatt hours. BMW mounts it under the rear seat, and there’s enough juice for 14 miles of fully electric range. Drivers also get 64 MPGe combined fuel economy. These figures make the 740i xDrive a natural comparison. It uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with 320 hp (239 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) and also has an eight-speed automatic. The sedan has EPA combined fuel economy of 22 mpg but starts nearly $5,000 cheaper at $85,495.Beyond the more efficient powertrain, BMW outfits the 740e with a few other special features. The exterior design is practically identical to other 7 Series models, except for the charging panel on the front driver’s side fender. The bars in the kidney grille also have blue flourishes. Inside, an eDrive button on the center console lets drivers force the powertrain into EV mode and set how much battery capacity the vehicle should maintain. A unique iDrive display shows the flow of energy, too.
