6.12.3 REMOVAL OF COMPASS INDEX ERROR. To reznove compass index error, proceed as
follows:

a. Position aircraft on each of four cardinal headings in turn and record each reading. Allow sufficient
time for compass to settle before taking each reading.
b. Calculate deviation between aircraft compass reading and actual magnetic heading.
c. Add deviations algebraically and divide sum by four. The result is the index error.
d. Loosen mounting screws and rotate compass in appropriate direction, noting amount of rotation.
Use a non-magnetic screwdriver.
Note
If error is plus (+), rotate compas s counter clockwise.
1£ error is minus (-), rotate in a clockwise
direction. Amount of rotation must equal index
error.
e. Secure :mounting screws.

6.12.4 MAGNETIC COMPENSATION.
a. Insure compensator is set to neutral position.
b. Check heading on north, and rerrlove all error by rotating co:mpensator N -S adjusting screw
until compass reading agrees with actual magnetic heading.
c. Check heading on east, and rerrlove all error by rotating compensator E -W adjusting screw
until heading agrees with actual magnetic heading.
d. Check heading on south, and remove half the error with N-S adjusting screw.
e. Check heading on west, and rerrlove half the error with E-W adjusting screw.
f. .Perform check swing at 45 -degree increments and note readings. All readings must be within
±. 3 degrees of actual magnetic heading.
