It looks just like the one at the New York Auto Show. The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF (Retractable Fastback) will be on sale in the United States next year just in time for the warmer weather when customers will want an open roof. The first to arrive will be the Launch Edition that will give 1,000 lucky customers an exclusive trim combination and a 42-millimeter Tourneau watch.Mazda will take a cue from the RF at the model’s debut at New York Auto Show premiere by only offering the Launch Edition in the combo of tri-coat Machine Gray Metallic paint, Auburn nappa leather, and a hand-painted black roof. These three finishes won’t be available together on any other 2017 RFs. The special model also includes the amenities from the Grand Touring trim like LED running lights, automatic air conditioning, heated seats, and a safety suite that includes blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane departure warning.Mechanically, the RF Launch Edition will be like the rest of the lineup, and the only option will be the choice between a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. All of them will use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 horsepower (116 kilowatts) and 148 pound-feet of torque (201 Newton-meters).The RF Launch Edition will first be available to current Mazda owners with a history of owning vehicles from the brand, and the brand will contact them by email. Any remaining examples will be available to the general public. RF Launch deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2017. Dealers will also get the Grand Touring or Club trim levels at about the same time. Mazda will announce prices soon. For reference, the 2016 Miata Club convertible with a manual starts at $29,435 in the U.S, and the Grand Touring droptop is $30,900.2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF to get limited-run Launch EditionMazda has detailed production plans for a limited number of MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition roadstersThe 'retractable fastback' variant was unveiled earlier this year in New York, introducing a stylish hardtop that automatically stows at the push of a button. Designers stretched the roofline further to the rear, mimicking a targa layout rather than simply placing a hard shell in the same space typically occupied by soft fabric.Celebrating the RF's arrival, the Launch Edition boasts an exclusive color combination with Machine Gray Metallic exterior paint, Auburn Nappa leather interior trim and a hand-painted black roof panel. The package will initially be offered to a select group of Mazda's "most loyal customers," sending pre-order invites via e-mail. Production will be limited to just 1,000 units. If the company's invite-only group does not buy each example, the deposit program will extend to the general public.Buyers will only be able to choose one option, outfitting the MX-5 with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Each vehicle will ship with a unique Torneau watch, designed to highlight the car."Rarely does any automaker have a vehicle that garners the sort of loyalty and enthusiasm MX-5 generates--something we don't take lightly," said Mazda North America senior VP Robert Davis. The general public won't have to wait long for the basic MX-5 RF, expected to arrive in US showrooms in the first quarter of 2017.Mazda limits MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition to 1,000 examples
