Inheritance is the passage of hereditary traits from one generation to the next.

The nuclei of all human cells except gametes contain 23 pairs of chromosomes—the diploid number (2n).
One chromosome in each pair came from the mother, and the other came from the father.
Each of these two homologues contains genes that control the same traits.
If one chromosome of the pair contains a gene for body hair, for example, its homologue will contain a gene for body hair in the same position.
