Th e more general lesson here is that an exclusive focus on individualistic
forms of psychotherapy and counseling tends to be of limited value in
combating widespread and destructive economic, political, social, and cultural
forces (Denham, this volume; Wohl, 2000). Th is holds true both for
indigenous healing in small non-Western societies such as the Salish Indians
in Canada and for psychosocial interventions in modern large-scale school
systems in the United States and elsewhere. Following this line of reasoning,
multicultural psychologists and mental health specialists such as Coleman
and Lindwall (this volume) have moved toward adopting a systems-oriented,
ecological perspective that supports expanding the scope of multicultural
guidance and school counseling programs. Th ey argue forcefully that school
counselors need to prepare their students for competing eff ectively in the
global economy while helping to reduce existing achievement gaps that
refl ect pervasive racial and class disparities. Altogether, they ask the multicultural
school counseling profession to adopt a more activist stand in order
to increase its impact among the young. In their view, the counseling profession
needs to place its individualistic activities in a broader political and
societal context while making good on those democratic values that society
claims to hold dear but which it often violates in practice. One can see in this
approach a certain similarity to the social systems perspective and politically
oriented style of intervention that community psychologists have developed
over the years.

selama bertahun-tahun.
