Audi will expand its Q SUV lineup next year, as the German automaker rolls out a new Audi Q2 compact SUV and launches a redesigned Audi Q5 midsize SUV.

Audi said it "plans to enter a new market segment with the Audi Q2 model next year."

U.S. launch timing, pricing and technical specifications were not disclosed.

The Q2 will be positioned below the Audi Q3, which competes against the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

Audi previewed a small SUV crossover called the Crosslane Coupe Concept at the 2012 Paris Auto Show, which hinted at the "design language of Audi's future Q models." The concept, a 2+2 seater plug-in hybrid, is aimed at "young, sporty customers."

The revamped Q5, which competes against the Acura RDX, BMW X3 and Lexus RX 350, will arrive at Audi dealerships next year.

"Audi will present the successor of the Audi Q5 next year," the company said in a statement.

No further details were disclosed.

Audi pledged its ongoing commitment to "alternative drive systems."

"In 2018, the first large-series battery-electric vehicle of the brand with the Four Rings will be launched, based on the Audi E-tron Quattro concept," Audi said. "By 2020, Audi will expand its model range to include 60 different automobiles."

The launch of the Q2 and Q5 are part of a $3.29 billion Audi spending plan.
