The rst step before using the VFL for testing an optical ber is to measure the output power
of the VFL. This can be done with a multimode test jumper and an optical power meter. Connect
the output of the VFL to the test jumper and the other end of the test jumper to the power meter
input. Set the power meter at the shortest wavelength possible. This is typically 850nm. The
measured optical output power of the VFL should be no less than –7dBm with a 62.5/125μm
optical ber. If the measured optical output power is less than –7dBm, replace the battery and
retest. Most VFLs will have a measured optical output power greater than –3dBm with a fresh
battery. Optical output power below –7dBm will limit the effectiveness of the VFL to identify
breaks and macrobends.
