A. Method of the Research
This research uses a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design, This is because there are external variables that take effect on the formation of the dependent variable (dependent). It aimed at obtaining the concept account whether or not the translation short story was to increase the students’ vocabulary. The ensuring description classifies the research design as follows:
O1-----X-----O2
Where:
O1 = pre-test
X = treatment
O2 = post-test

B. Variables of the Research
1. Variables
There are two variables in this research namely independent variables and dependent variables. The independent variable is translation short story and dependent variable is students’ vocabulary achievement.
2. Operational Deviation
a. Translation short story is one technique that can improve the students’ vocabulary.
b. Vocabulary achievement means the vocabulary of the students after doing treatment that is indicated by the better score in the post-test than in the pre-test.
C. Population and sample
1. Populasi
The population of this research is all the class XI in SMAN 4 Baubau, who consist 24 classes. The number of students as population of this research is 720 students.
2. Sample
The sample of this research is the class XI IPS in SMAN 4 Baubau. The researcher uses cluster random sampling. To get the sample of population, researcher decided the sample is consists of 20 people. Moore (1983: 122) said that cluster random sampling is the random selection of areas, group or clusters such as class room, schools or area of the city.
D. Instrument of the research
The instrument of the research is a translation test that will be given as pre-test and post-test. The pre-test is intended to find out the students’ prior knowledge, while the post-test is design to measure the students’ achievement based on the material had been learned. The text translate is word/phrases in sentence on the short story which is translate from Indonesian into English.

A. Metode Penelitian
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode pra-eksperimen dengan satu kelompok pre-test dan desain post-test, ini adalah karena ada variabel eksternal yang berlaku pada pembentukan variabel dependen (tergantung). Ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh akun konsep atau tidaknya cerita pendek terjemahan adalah untuk meningkatkan kosakata siswa. The memastikan keterangan mengklasifikasikan desain penelitian sebagai berikut:
O1 ----- X ----- O2
Dimana:
O1 = pre-test
X = perlakuan
O2 = post-test

B. Variabel Penelitian
1. Variabel
Ada dua variabel dalam penelitian ini variabel yaitu independen dan variabel dependen. Variabel bebas adalah terjemahan cerita pendek dan variabel dependen adalah prestasi kosakata siswa.
2. Operasional Deviasi
a. Terjemahan cerita pendek adalah salah satu teknik yang dapat meningkatkan kosakata siswa.
b. Prestasi kosakata berarti kosakata siswa setelah melakukan pengobatan yang ditunjukkan dengan skor yang lebih baik dalam post-test dari pada pre-test.
C. Populasi dan sampel
1. POPULASI
Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh kelas XI di SMAN 4 Baubau, yang terdiri 24 kelas. Jumlah siswa sebagai populasi penelitian ini adalah 720 siswa.
2. Sampel
Sampel penelitian ini adalah IPS kelas XI di SMAN 4 Baubau. Peneliti menggunakan cluster random sampling. Untuk mendapatkan sampel dari populasi, peneliti memutuskan sampel terdiri dari 20 orang. Moore (1983: 122) mengatakan bahwa cluster random sampling adalah pilihan acak dari daerah, kelompok atau cluster seperti ruang kelas, sekolah atau daerah kota.
D. Instrumen penelitian
Instrumen penelitian adalah tes terjemahan yang akan diberikan sebagai pre-test dan post-test. The pre-test dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui 'pengetahuan sebelumnya, sedangkan post-test adalah desain untuk mengukur siswa siswa berprestasi berdasarkan materi yang telah dipelajari. Teks menerjemahkan adalah kata / frase dalam kalimat pada cerita pendek yang menerjemahkan dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris.
