2. Why are parents important?
Parents share their impressions, regardless of how valid they might be, with other parents, teachers, administrators, and members of the community. Moreover, when parents don’t agree with or respect a teacher, they share their negative impressions with their children which can cause serious problems. For these reasons and many more, it is important to have a positive relationship with parents.
Educators have long recognized the importance and benefits of parental imvolvement in the education of children (Levison, 1999). Parental involvement in schools can help children develop socially, emotionally, cognitivelly, and academically. The purpose in this chapter, the term parents is used even though it is recognized that many different family members may be caregivers for children such as grandparents or older siblings.
In the best circumstances, parens and teachers work together and create partnerships to help children develop socially and emotionally. Parents and teachers can also work together to help a child develop academically, especially if the child is having minor difficulties. Consider the nine years old boy who mixes up certain Russian Cyrillic letters with the English language alphabet. Together the teacher and parents devise a plan. Each day at school, the teacher gives the boy a little extra english language letter recognition instruction. Both the parents and son sit down every night after dinner and play a flash card game with Engblish language letters.
