how archaeologists identify those patterns. We first
consider classification—the ways that archaeologists
divide the many kinds of objects found into
reasonable and useful artifact types. We then discuss
the concepts of archaeological cultures, periods,
phases, assemblages, and components—all of
which are used to organize archaeological data into
what is called space-time systematics.
IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, archaeological
sites were viewed as little more than mines in which
to prospect for artifacts. But professionally trained
archaeologists, such as Kidder and Wormington,
shifted their objectives to focus more on understanding
the person behind the artifact rather than the artifact
itself. And in the 1960s, archaeology further refined
that focus, wishing not only to reconstruct what
happened in the past, but also to explain that past.
