How others’ reactions influence self-esteem
Coopersmith’s (1967) study of nine- and ten-year-old
white, middle-class boys, found that the optimum
conditions for the development of high self-esteem
involve a combination of (a) firm enforcement of limits
on the child’s behaviour, and (b) a good deal of acceptance
of the child’s autonomy and freedom within those limits.
Firm management helps the child to develop firm inner
controls: a predictable and structured social environment
helps the child to deal effectively with the environment
and, hence, to feel ‘in control’ of the world (rather than
controlled by it).
Coopersmith followed these boys through into
adulthood, and found that the high self-esteem boys
consistently outperformed the low self-esteem boys,
both educationally and occupationally.
