There has, of course, been no lack of alternative approaches, but the one I
wish to draw attention to here is what is often called the Task-based approach. I
would also like to suggest a possible psycholinguistic framework for that
approach. The framework would be that outlined by Vygotsky (1962, 1966,
1978) and his disciples Luria (1976) and Wertsch (1979,1981,1985a, 1985b)
rather than the Neo-behaviourist or Piagetian models which have dominated
educational psychology for so many years.
