The curriculum saw an increase in religiousand Qur’an classes, as well as Arabic, the languageof the Qur’an. English and Arabic are themajor foreign languages taught: English fromjunior high school, and the Qur’an from firstgrade of elementary school. First graders, whohave not yet learned much Persian, the Iranianlanguage, recite the Qur’an after listening to iton tapes. Islamic history and other religiousclasses are part of the university entrance exams. The most striking feature of postrevolutionschools is the “moral education teacher(morabbi-ye tarbiyati or morabbi-ye parvareshi).”2 The teacher does not teach particularclasses but presides over various school eventsand gives educational guidance. Most schoolevents today are related to Islamic religiousevents such as the commemoration of the birthof Ali, who is of particular importance toShiites. The teacher guides and takes the leadin religious events. The primary qualificationfor such a teacher is his knowledge of Islam.
