Note that the minimum fuel consumption for a distance for a distances occurs at the flight condition where the range factor is maximum. For the flight conditions where the RF is constant or nearly constance or nearly constant, Eq. (1-42) can be integrated from the initial to final conditions and the following expression obtained for the aircraft weight fraction. This is called the breguest range equation. For the range factor to remain constant CL/CD and V/TSFC need to be constant. Above 36-kft altitude, the ambient temperature is constance and a constant velocity V will correspond to constant mach and constant TSFC for a fixed throttle setting. If CL is constant, CL/CD will remain constant. Since the aircraft weight W decreases during the flight, the altitude must increase to reduce the density of the ambient air and produce the required lift (L=W) while mantaining CL and velocity constanct. This flight profile is called a cruise climb.
