The food coloring in water is evidence that the molecules of water are in motion.
If they weren’t in motion, you’d expect the food coloring to just drop to
the bottom and not spread out. But the food coloring spreads out pretty fast.
That’s because the water molecules in motion bump into the food coloring
molecules, which also are in motion, spreading them throughout the liquid. The
hotter the water, the more rapidly the food coloring disperses. We take that to
mean that hot water molecules move faster than cold water molecules.
This leads us to the basis of the concept of temperature
and what it means for one thing to be hotter than
another. The hotter something is, the faster its molecules
are moving. And that means that a hot collection
of molecules has more kinetic energy than an equal
number of cold molecules. We can take that one step
further and say that the more kinetic energy possessed
by the molecules in an object, the more thermal energy
the object has.
All right, what’s going on with that column of liquid in a thermometer?
Suppose you put the thermometer in a cup of hot water. All those water molecules
are bouncing around at relatively high speeds because the water is hot.
The molecules in the thermometer liquid start at room temperature so they’re
moving quite a bit slower. When the two come in contact,2 the fast-moving
molecules collide with the slow-moving molecules. In these collisions, the fastmoving
molecules transfer some of their kinetic energy to the slow-moving molecules,
making the slow ones move faster than they were. The end result is that
the liquid in the thermometer is now hotter than it was.
