The current special issue provides

The current special issue provides interesting perspectives
on how emerging adults negotiate their investment in the two
domains of love and work in different cultures—notably, showing
the differences in these investments. We suggest that these
reflect, among other things, differences in the capacity to
imbue these domains with a sense of life meaning. Though the
set of studies in this special issue did not address issues of
meaning of life or search for meaning and self-actualization,
several of their findings can be interpreted in light of the postulates
above.
As for the first and second postulates, in Finland, work
seems more important and reflects a more normative task than
engagement in committed romantic relations during emerging
adulthood. For example, the mean age for marriage in Finland
is over 30; yet, respondents with a mean age of 30 reported
engaging 2-fold in life goals related to work than in life goals
related to family (Salmela-Aro et al., 2007). The results
reported in this special issue demonstrate that emerging adults
indeed invest more, in terms of life goals and identification, in
education and work than in romantic relations (Ranta, Dietrich,
& Salmela-Aro, 2014). The statistical analyses yielded profiles
primarily related to investment in terms of life goals in a career,
and in fact no profile focused solely on the establishment of a
romantic relationship; this is so even though the majority of
emerging adults in this sample were in a relationship. Emerging
adults in Finland, at least those on the academic track who participated
in the study, probably evince the sequential investment
discussed by Arnett (2007) and Shulman and Connolly
(2013), where youth first invest in the realm of work and only
then focus on committed romantic love.
