What is the field Cognitive-Field Theory of Learning ?Cognitive-field learning theory has emerged as a newly oriented current synthesis whose basic paradigm or model centers upon a person’s interaction with his contemporaneous psychological environment. This learning Theory has developed as an emergent synthesis arising from existent active-subjective and the opposite passive-objective extremes in dealing with human motivation and learning. Within this psychology, learning is neither equated with unfoldment and sheer expression of inner urges nor a conditioning process, which comes from the environment’s impinging upon a biological organism frpm without. Instead, cognitive-field psychologist focus their meaning of learning in the aspects of a situation within which a person and his psychological environment come together in a psychological field or life space; the person, “in striving to feel competent and self-determining is involved in a continued process of seek and conquer.”What are the sources of cognitive – Field Learning Theory ?The works of many psychologist have made worthy contributions to cognitive – field theory, even though most of these psychologist have not identified themselves or their ideas with cognitive – field theory as such. (The expression cognitive – field has been developed by Donald Snygg, Maurice P. Hunt, your author, and others.) Psychologist whose works have made earlier contributions to cognitive – field theory include Gordon W. Allport, Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roger G. Barker, Ernest E. Bayles, Boyd H. Bode, Hadley Cantril, Morton Deutsch, John Dewey, Sigmund Koch, Kurt Lewin, Rollo May, Donald Snygg, Edward C. Tolman, and Herbert F. Wright. More recent Contributions have been made by the research and ideas of Albert Bandura, Ricard de Charms, Edward L. Deci, Jerome S. Bruner, Walter Mischel, and Bernard Weiner. However, none of them champions cognitive – field psychology, so named. Hence, this chapter and chapter 9 are in no way an attempt to present the position of any one, or a combination, of those scholars. Instead, they constitute an effort, drawing upon the thinking and research of these people, to develop an effective current psychological position and outlook. Cognitive – Field learning theory draws heavily from the pioneer field psychology of Kurt Lewin (1890-1947). However, it should not be considered merely a restatement of Lewin’s position. This German-American psychologist was interested primarily in a study of human motivation. Consequently, his field theory was developed not as a theory of learning but more as a theory pf motivation and perception. However, he was concered with the application of his theory to learning situations and did some writing in this vein. Lewin’s basic, comprehensive concept was life space. Consequently, life space has become the basic model for relativistic psychological thinking. It includes everything that one needs to know about a person in order to understand his concrete behavior in a specific psychological situation at given time. Accordingly, it encompasses the person under consideration and his psychological environment.
