As such, programs that take this approach must consider the mechanisms by which productionchanges are expected to affect nutrition or consumption indicators. Changes in total income shouldbe tracked as well as diet composition. Program design should involve personnel that are familiarwith the relationships that govern the production-income-consumption loop and with the literaturedocumenting previous work in this genre. The body of work concerning agricultural commercializationand nutrition at IFPRI provides excellent examples of the complexity of these relationships (von Braunet al 1994), as does MSU’s earlier work on the effects of cash cropping on household consumptionand nutrition (Tefft and Kelly 2004; Kelly, et al. 2004).
