Humanist and existential ideas also connect with ‘green’ environmental political and social philosophies (George and Wilding, 1994) These emphasize the importance of human beings controlling their destructive capacities and living in harmony with their environments. These views are increasingly influential on younger people through the impact of eco-critical ideas (see Chapter 7).
Similarly, we can see relationships with feminist theories. This is because they focus on woman’s shared experience in developing a consciousness of their oppressed social position (see Chapter 13). Both humanistic and feminist ideas favour participative self development while recognizing the need to control the destruction that is implicit in existing social relationships.
