There are four elements of TA; structural, transactional, games and script analyses. Structural analysis proposes that our personality has three ‘ego states’, or ways of thinking about the world. These are associated with typical behavior patterns. The parent state is a collection of attitudes typical of the sort of injunctions that a parent figure might give to a child and the sort of perceptions that a child might have of such a figure. The child state contains feelings and attitudes left over from childhood, typically rather self centred, but also uncontrolled and potentially creative. The adult state manages, mostly rationally, the relationships between the ego states, and between them and the outside world. These concepts are like the psychoanalytic structures of the superego,, id and ego, but TA is less concerned with internal interactions among parts of the mind, drives and irrational responses.
Transactional analysis is about how the ego states in one person interact with those in another. Transactions are exchanges between people’s ego states, which may be open or hidden, and problems arise when open and hidden messages involve different ego states or transactions.
