Geographic CoverageThe MTBS Project maps fires in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico for the time period from 1984 tothe present. Currently, data for over 17,000 fires and 120 million acres are available through theyear 2011. The project limits mapping to fires greater than 500 acres in the eastern US andgreater than 1,000 acres in the western US. Note that there is an attempt to map all fires meetingproject criteria, but in some cases fires cannot be mapped due to unavailability of fire occurrenceinformation to locate fires and/or a lack of suitable Landsat satellite imagery. The DOI and USFS BAER Mapping Support Programs have been mapping selected fires insupport of BAER team activities since about 2002. Through the 2012 fire season the programshave mapped over 1,187 fires and nearly 38 million acres. These programs generally map moresignificant fires in terms of potential for hazards to human health and natural resources. However, this may vary due to local DOI/USFS priorities. Fires have been mapped across theUS, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico and several international locations (i.e., Chile,Australia, Republic of Georgia).
