As in Study 2, we used two-way ANOVA to examine the influ- ence of shopping companion gender and group cohesiveness, respectively, and their interactions on impulse purchase behavior. The degree to which participants who imagined shopping with an opposite gender companion (M = 2.95, SD = 1.24) exhibited impulse purchasing was higher than that of those who imagined shopping with the same gender companion (M = 2.49, SD = 1.07), (F(1, 73) = 2.978, p < .1), as in Study 1.
The interaction was significant between high/low personal susceptibility to interpersonal influence and shopping with the same/opposite gender companion (F(1, 71) = 4.002, p < .05). The degree of impulse purchase behavior among those who were highly susceptible to interpersonal influence and imagined themselves shopping with an opposite gender companion (M = 3.71) was higher than that of those who imagined shopping with the same gender companion (M = 2.60), (Mopposite gender – Msame gender = 1.11) (F(1, 35) = 9.29, p < .05). The difference between these two was far greater than that between the degree of impulse purchase behavior of those with low susceptibility to interpersonal influence who imagined themselves shopping with an opposite gender com- panion (M = 2.39) and those shopping with the same gender companion (M = 2.33) (Mopposite gender – Msame gender = 0.06) (F(1, 36) = 0.03, p > .1).
