You need both at all times, because your always fighting against the sprite/base class, which wants to revert to whatever the default is for the sprite your using.
If it doesn't change after battle you can try entering the warren report while the out of battle code is on, if that doesn't work then I'm not sure what to tell you since leonar's sprite gave me leonar's portrait.

The steps I followed the first time were:
1. Changed out of battle sprite to Leonar(Denam appeared as a shadow)

2. Entered battle(in status screen Denam had leonar's sprite, but not in the battle screen)

3. Turned on the in battle sprite modifier(sprite immediately changed to Leonar, but the portrait was still of Denam)

4.Finished Battle, back to status screen(portrait changed to Leonar)

Alternatively changing classes will also set the battle sprite/portrait, but if you want to stay in lord class it's not really an option.
