Reaction of the ligand with cobalt and zincsalts, MX, (M = Co, Zn; X = C1, Br, NCS) inethyl alcohol led to the formation of ionicderivatives, [M(NTB)X],[MX,], containing fivecoordinatepseudo-trigonal bipyramidal cationsand a four-coordinate tetrahedral anion. Theblue cobalt complexes appear to be stable infairly dry non-aqueous solvents but on recrystallizationfrom aqueous acetone a series ofpurple five-coordinate derivatives, [Co(NTB)-X]X (X = C1, Br, NCS) were formed. Thesetrigonal bipyramidal cations could also bestabilized as their tetraphenylborate salts bydirect synthesis from alcoholic solution. Other five-coordinate derivatives include pink cobaltnitrate and perchlorate derivatives, [Co(NTB)-X]X, [Co(NTB)X]BPh, (X = NO,, ClO,) anda series of white zinc complexes, [Zn(NTB)X]-BPh, (X = Cl, Br, I, NCS). Structural assignmentshave been justified by electronic, vibrational,and nmr spectra and by conductance andmagnetic data.
