In his scholarly volume Care of the Psyche: A History of PsychologicalHealing, the medical historian Stanley W. Jackson (1999) has traced essentialelements of psychological healing in the Western tradition from antiquityto modern times. According to Jackson, “talking cures” have traditionallyincluded an emphasis on the healer–suff erer relationship; an authoritativeand attentive healer; and his or her use of reward or punishment, suggestionand persuasion, explanation, interpretation, and guidance. Th e healer off ers consolation and comfort to the suff erer and provides support for the client’seff orts “to get things out.” Confession, confi ding, and changes in the client’sself-understanding and self-observation have also been essential features ofsuccessful psychotherapeutic interventions over the centuries. It should beadded that many of these therapeutic processes can also be found in non-Western healing encounters, although cultural infl uences and explanationstypically determine which of these elements are assigned primary importanceand which of them are relegated to the tacit background for the encounterbetween healer and suff erer.
