2. In Christian Education
To the Christian teacher, attention is the mental focusing of consciousness. The teacher, however, must go beyond mere attention to achieve his goal. Interest is sustained attention. There are three kinds of attention: (1) involuntary, (2) voluntary, and (3) non-voluntary. Involuntary attention is spontaneous or flitting; it turn to any slight distraction. Voluntary attention is accomplished through force of will. But the teacher cannot force attention; it must be of the pupil’s own free will. Non-voluntary attention is that kind in which the pupil become so absorbed in the study that he is oblivious to what is going around him. This is the point of most genuine interest which the Christian teacher seeks to reach. The evidence by which the teacher can know his pupils are interested is the kind of attention being given by the pupils. Where interest is not present, the teacher by analysis should remove all hindrances in the teaching situation that are evident. These would include all discomforts, unnecessary disturbances, distractions, and lack of good teaching techniques.
